Founded in Toronto Copp Clark traces its origins to Hugh Scobie’s book and stationery business at 16 King Street East in Toronto. Scobie was already an active publisher, printer, and public figure in Toronto, establishing the foundation for Copp Clark’s long role in reference publishing.

First Canadian Almanac Published In partnership with James Balfour, Hugh Scobie published Scobie & Balfour’s Canadian Almanac and Repository of Useful Knowledge, establishing an early legacy in trusted reference publishing. The Copp Clark Name Takes Shape William W. Copp and Henry J. Clark gained control of the firm and expanded its publishing and printing operations under the Copp Clark name. By 1880, key commercial operations had moved to 9 Front Street West, placing the company in the heart of Toronto’s publishing and business district.
